Mario Barth has once again put together a spectacular convention which showcased some of the world’s top artists and traditional tattoo masters.
This historical event was held at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on Oct 2-4, 2009 where the top professionals held seminars and one-on-one sessions. Mario Barth is the owner and chief tattoo artist at Starlight Tattoo, with 20,000 customers, making it the most successful studio in the world. Mario has an extraordinary celebrity clientele, including Sylvester Stallone.

It looked like Stallone was looking to get another tattoo as he took his time looking at the tattoo books and talking to a few of the artists.

Pili Mo’o, a samoan tatau artist had a large crowd watching him do his hand tapping tatau. Pili trained under the late Sua Sulu’ape Paulo 11 of Samoa. Sylvester Stallone was very interested in talking to Pili.
Mad Max Beers and his wife Amy came from Michigan for the convention. Max has been tattooing since he was 15 years old and does his tattoo’s free hand, after a lot of studying, reading and researching. Amy said her 4 year old daughter Giovanna has started to draw and is a budding artist.

Chris Pearson from San Antonio had the most outstanding tattooed face. I asked him which tattoo was the most painful and he said it was his nose. Good thing he has a small nose so it didn’t take that much time to do. Chris said his first tattoo was at the age of 13 and now at the age of 33 he is well on his way to a full body tattoo. He was having his back done as I spoke to him.

Next came the judging of the best black & White, best color, best tribal and best tattoo of the day. Tattoo Lou was one of the judges.
As I roamed around I found mostly everyone who was having a tattoo done, were relaxed and enjoying the attention as everyone stopped to talk and take pictures.
I was very impressed with the work of two new artists who were sketching free hand and hopefully the pictures will find their way onto someone’s body.

I was most excited to see a booth that was set up to audition people for a new reality show. Tattoo Masters Worldwide. I am a reality show junkie so this caught my immediate attention.

The kick off was this week and auditions started to select 30 participants to get tattoos from the best 15 up and coming new artists. The show will tape in Los Angeles and the winner of the best tattoo will win a shop in New York and the person getting the winning tattoo will receive $25,000.
Now you have to know that I did audition for the show because I have secretly always wanted to get a tattoo and never had the nerve to do it. Now that I have attended a couple of tattoo conventions, I find the art work to be so beautiful and my desire has grown. I would have an angel tattoo but I haven’t decided where it will be. You can give me some suggestions when you see me, or send me your comments.
